Retriever/Pup Network

Our WatchDog Retriever & Pups Solution is a good choice if you want to collect multiple data points in one field, vineyard or golf course. Setting up a network allows your devices to talk to each other as long as each is within a ½ mile line of sight of another device. Think of this network similar to a walkie talkie system - as long as you are in range, the signal can transmit data. Information is transmitted to a WatchDog Retriever. Information can be downloaded via USB or Direct Connection to your PC OR if you incorporate a DataScout Modem into your network, you can view the data real time in the WatchDog App and via our SpecConnect Cloud Solution.

WHAT WEATHER STATION DO I NEED?

Our WatchDog 3000 Series Weather Stations that use radio communication are required for the Pup/Retriever Network. They are distinguished by DU in the part number. Our weather stations have integrated measurements already included and there are multiple options to choose from based on what you want to measure.

WHAT IS A RETRIEVER?

A retriever is the vehicle used to collect all the data from the network of sensor/repeater pups and is required for the Pup/Retriever Netwwork. Every retriever can support up to 12 pups. All devices in the network must be placed within a ½ mile line of sight (approximately 2,500 feet) of each other to keep data flowing through the network to the retriever.

WHAT IS A SENSOR PUP?

A sensor pup allows you to connect up to four external sensor inputs each. These are used within your network to gather valuable data in a different area from where your WatchDog Weather Station is located. Choose the sensors you want based on the measurements you are trying to obtain. The sensor pup transmits data to the retriever directly or via other pups.

WHAT IS A SENSOR?

A sensor is a device that plugs into a pup station or sensor pup to measure data such as Rainfall, Temperature, Relative Humidity, Soil Moisture, Leaf Wetness, Light, Wind Speed/Direction.

WHAT IS A REPEATER PUP?

A repeater pup serves as a “signal extender” to provide a path for signal transmission around obstacles or to extend range. It looks the same as a sensor pup but as no sensor inputs. It merely helps transmit data from other devices in the network to the retiever.

WHAT ABOUT A MODEM?

A DataScout modem communicates the data to the web using either a Cellular or WiFi signal. It attached to the WatchDog Retriever NOT to the WatchDog Weather Station.

You DO NOT need a modem IF you only want to download data from the Retriever onto the included USB drive and then view on your computer using our SpecWare Software.

You DO need a modem IF you want to view data real time in the WatchDog App and send data to the SpecConnect Cloud to view and manipulate into relevant reports.

HOW DO I VIEW THE DATA?

IF YOU DO NOT ADD A MODEM:
WatchDog App - data can be viewed via bluetooth connection in the WatchDog app while you are near the weather station
SpecWare Software - data can be viewed by downloading to USB or direct connecting to your PC

IF YOU DO ADD A MODEM:
WatchDog App - data can be viewed wirelessly from anywhere at anytime
SpecConnect Cloud - data is wirelessly sent to the cloud and can be viewed at anytime on your PC/Tablet
