Global Water Issues
It seems as long as drinking water is available that the public would not think there is a water crisis today . . . however, one exists on a global scale. As the World Water Vision report indicates, “It is a crisis of managing water so badly that billions of people - and the environment - suffer badly.”
It is not just the management of water but also the quality of water that is the issue. Without the access to a reliable source of water, food is extremely difficult to grow and even more difficult to preserve. Did you know that globally, humans utilize 70% of water sources for agriculture and irrigation, and only 10% for domestic use?
According to un.org, “unsafe water is the primary cause of disease, poverty, and hunger, and if you don’t fix the water problem, you can’t fix the economic, health, and equality problems.” It is simply amazing the causes and effects that water has on this world at both micro and macro levels. For example, the water and sanitation crisis has claimed more lives through disease than any war has claimed through guns. In addition, one of the greatest causes of poverty in Africa is the lack of access to clean drinking water. And the Water Crisis is not just a Western Hemisphere problem but also Eastern, as organic matter and overgrowth of nutrients that can produce algae that build and rob estuaries of vital oxygen levels.
Although water is one of the most abundant resources on this planet, only 1% of the total supply is reliably available for human consumption. One would think better Water Management principles would be utilized, but they continue to be misused and mismanaged. Weather stations, soil moisture meters, and other agricultural meters are ideal solutions to help assist with better water measurement principles and better decisions. Acquiring data on which to base decisions is crucial to less waste of this precious resource.
