Why Soil Moisture Matters. |

Proper soil moisture is critical for keeping greens uniformly firm and healthy. However, the challenge for turf managers is to maintain the right amount of water in the soil. When soil moisture drops below the proper level, problems develop. Under-irrigation leads to wilting, loss of color and reduced green speed. Over-irrigation can lead to poor turf conditions as well, by allowing for disease formation and thinning of turf. Plus, over-irrigation is a waste of water. The best way to prevent all of these problems is to be proactive. Regularly measure soil moisture!

Many turf managers are committed to a deep, infrequent watering schedule. Others rely on the old-school pocket-knife system to check their greens and time their irrigation.
